#15 New Year's Resolutions
Most people don't keep their new year's resolutions. Is it because we're too busy trying to do more rather than be more?
As you watch the episode, consider:
1. We all have areas of our lives that need improvement. Rather than forcing ourselves to become different people and to do "more" in our lives, what is the key ingredient, according to Saint Porphyrios, to all of this? How do we obtain this?
2. A small flame on a candle allows for it to burn beautifully for a while, while putting a torch to a candle forces it to melt instantly. How can we use this analogy for our own lives and our own spirituality?
3. How does the example of Saint Theophylact serve as a model of joy for our lives?

Hey everybody this is Steve, and with a new year come New Year resolutions. If we're honest with ourselves, we can all find areas in our lives that need a little improvement. I should workout more. Lots of us make resolutions, but few of us actually follow through. According to one survey, only 28% of people keep their resolutions, and 46% never even get started. That's shocking but maybe it shouldn't be so surprising. We're all busy and it can feel like we're juggling a little too much at once. And new years resolutions just add more responsibilities to our already busy days. Or they add stuff that isn't too fun to our day like eating less delicious sweets and more yucky vegetables.
Maybe our new years resolutions shouldn't just be about what we want to do, but who we want to be. You may remember we talked about prayer in one of our episodes; click here to see it again. We talked about the advice of Saint Porphyrios who said that no matter what you do, do it with joy. And joy is something that comes from our hearts, from the very center of our being. Our hearts are filled with joy when they're filled with the Holy Spirit.
We can resolve to pray more or go to services more, but, without a real change of heart, a change of who we are, that's just more stuff to do, more stuff to add to our list, more stuff most of us won't do. Before we resolve to do more, let's resolve to be more, to ask God to be His children, to be His saints, to be filled with His light, His love, His light. So let's Be the Bee, and use this new year as a new chance to draw closer to God and each other. Be the Bee and live Orthodoxy. Remember to like and subscribe. I'll see you all, next week.
